What is a dietitian?
A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a health professional trained in the science of nutrition and health. Dietitians must complete an accredited degree in food and nutrition and supervised professional training in order to be registered. Dietetics is a regulated profession, so only dietitians registered with provincial regulatory bodies (In Ontario The College of Dietitians of Ontario) may use the titles “dietitian,” “registered dietitian (RD),” and “clinical dietitian.”
Dietitians often work with people who want to improve their health or reduce their risk of chronic disease with the food they eat, or who want to lose or gain weight. Dietitians who work specifically with children do all of these things, but may also help parents with children who don’t grow as they should or who have food allergies or other conditions requiring special diets (like celiac disease).
